I have heard that if the spark plugs are removed on the Mercedes GDI engine(i.e., GLS580) to scope the inside of the cylinder bores that the removed plugs should be replaced with brand new plugs due to the fact that the crush washer has already been crushed and cannot be replaced. This when they are removed and re-used, then torqued to 23 N/M, the orientation of the tip will not align as it would when new and the the high pressure fuel injector of the GDI engine can spray fuel directly on to the electrode and conceivably cause a misfire. Is this a real concern?
This is a good question, and it comes up fairly often with modern GDI engines.
In practice, this is not a real-world concern on Mercedes-Benz GDI engines such as the GLS580.
While it’s true that spark plugs use a crush washer that deforms on initial installation, removing a spark plug for inspection and reinstalling it does not meaningfully change electrode orientation in a way that would affect injector targeting or cause a misfire. Spark plugs are not indexed components on these engines, and Mercedes-Benz does not specify indexing or mandatory replacement solely because a plug has been removed if it is otherwise serviceable.
Fuel injectors in Mercedes GDI systems are engineered with spray patterns designed around combustion chamber geometry, piston crown shape, and in-cylinder airflow—not precise spark plug ground strap orientation. The injector spray is not narrowly aimed at a specific electrode position, and small rotational changes from reinstalling a plug will not result in fuel being sprayed directly onto the electrode in a manner that would cause misfires.
From an OEM standpoint, Mercedes-Benz Workshop Information System (WIS) procedures (e.g., AR15.10-P-xxxx series for spark plug removal and installation) specify:
– Inspection of the spark plug and sealing surface
– Replacement only if the plug is worn, fouled, damaged, or outside service interval
